👋 Who’s Behind This, and Why Should I Listen?

Hey, my name is Jay. Ten years ago, my kids and I lost Larissa, my soulmate of 26 years, the mother of my children, and the unconditional love of my life, to depression. I spent nearly five years drowning in grief... and alcohol. Not healing, not living, just surviving... barely.

OUr children were just three and thirteen when she died. I was trying to show up for them, but I was exhausted, in a fog, drunk, high, and lost. I had no motivation. I was sleeping too much or not at all. I was falling apart but pretending I was okay. I went to the bar seven nights a week to numb the pain, and called it coping.

I stayed in that hell for so long because I believed what everyone around me was saying. That time would heal. That grief lasts forever. That I would just learn to live with it. So I just kept doing what I was doing and hoping for the best. All while wearing a mask that said "I'm fine" for everyone else.

The kids and I attended a grief support group and I spent three and a half years retelling the same story over and over. I thought I was helping myself, but all I was doing was reinforcing the pain, keeping the grief in control, and nothing changed.

Now it is ten years later. My daughter is thirteen. My son is twenty-two and married. And I can say without hesitation—I love my life.

I still love her. I still miss her. I still talk to her every day. But it no longer makes me cry. It makes me smile. It brings peace, not pain. There are no more “should have beens.” No more “what ifs.” Just life, exactly as it is.
