Your brain does not show you reality.
It shows you what you already believe.
From a neuroscience perspective, the brain uses something called the Reticular Activating System, or RAS. Its job is to filter the millions of pieces of information around you every second and decide what gets your attention.
It does not choose what is true.
It chooses what is relevant.
And relevance is determined by what you repeatedly think, focus on, and believe.
If your mind is wired around loss, your brain will highlight everything that reminds you of it. Happy couples. Memories. Dates. Places. Conversations. It will pull those into your awareness and make them feel important.
If your mind is wired around pain, your brain will show you more reasons to feel it.
If your mind is wired around anger, your brain will find things to justify it.
If your mind is wired around “this should not have happened,” your brain will keep showing you everything that proves it.
This is not coincidence.
This is filtering.
The brain is constantly scanning the world and asking, what matches the pattern?
And then it shows you more of that.
This is why people feel triggered by things others do not even notice.
This is why seeing someone happy can create anger.
This is why being told to move on can feel offensive.
Not because those things are inherently painful.
Because they conflict with the pattern the brain is trying to maintain.
The brain is not trying to hurt you.
It is trying to stay consistent with what it already knows.
Here is the part most people never see.
You are not reacting to the world as it is.
You are reacting to the version of it your brain is showing you.
And your brain is showing you exactly what you have trained it to show you.
That is why nothing changes with time.
Because the filter stays the same.
The same thoughts.
The same focus.
The same emotional reactions.
The same proof.
Over and over again.
And as long as the filter does not change, the experience does not change.
